When it comes to DUI cases, cost is certainly a factor that clients will consider when hiring an attorney. Attorneys can charge whatever they deem appropriate when it comes to the defense of a DUI case. In my opinion, you want to find an attorney who knows what they are doing first and foremost (getting a bargain price, but a horrible result makes no sense).
Finding someone with experience in the courthouse your case is pending should be of chief concern. Attorneys who have successfully traveled the road you are about to embark upon will be in the best position to advise you and achieve a solid result under the circumstances of your particular case. I try to make sure that my prices are fair, while keeping in mind not to sacrifice quality representation for the client.
It is up to an individual attorney to have a competitive price, while also keeping in mind that there are many “mill practices” (this is usually where a good attorney puts their credentials out for the public, but does not actually practice in the firm). Be wary of this type of practice. It is ok to have a team of attorneys as long as the main ones are involved in the firm and available to make sure you are treated fairly!
We give free consultations over the phone or in person. I like to hear a little bit about the case and see what the client’s expectations are before quoting a price. If the client is looking to fight the case through jury trial versus have us achieve the best possible plea bargain, I need to know this before quoting a fee. We often times can match or beat competitors prices, depending on whether the other attorney is actually a seasoned savvy DUI defense attorney, versus a novice who has not business defending your case.
I make it a goal of mine to be honest and straight forward with potential clients who contact my firm and to quote a fee that takes into account the prevailing market price and the level of skill and experience the Hedding Law Firm and its attorneys possess. Your best bet is to set up a face to face consultation and get a feel for how we handle DUI business and of course whether you feel comfortable with us and our approach to your case. This is important because in my experience if you feel comfortable with your attorney, the judge and prosecutor will likely feel the same way.
In my opinion, if you were unlucky enough to get a DUI, you should have the mentality that you will do it once, do it right and never do it again! Therefore trying to go cheap and inexperienced is probably not the best strategy. When your case is over you want to have the peace of mind that you did everything you could do to minimize the potential damages to your driving and criminal record and move forward with your life as unscathed by the criminal system as possible.
